By Elevate+ Board Member Marilú Marcillo

Early in my career, I knew what it was like to take an 8-hour, middle-of-the-night journey just to be considered for my first career opportunity at 3M Company. Growing up as a first-generation immigrant on East 100th Street in Spanish Harlem and working my way through college as a first-gen student, I didn't have a pre-made roadmap—just an unshakeable belief that education and opportunity were my tickets forward. Throughout my journey, from working $4-an-hour campus jobs to becoming a top corporate producer and now serving as a Business Dean, I’ve learned a fundamental truth: underrepresented young adults don't lack talent or drive—they lack equitable access to the paid, formative experiences that unlock their full potential.
That conviction is why I have proudly served as a Board Member for Elevate to Even Plus (Elevate+) over the last 3 years. Elevate+ is actively breaking the cycle of social and economic inequality by funding high-impact, paid internships and connecting mission-aligned organizations with exceptional young talent. Research from NACE shows that access to early professional experiences like these can increase a student’s lifetime earnings by more than $1.5 million. Paid work experiences aren't just a line on a resume; they provide the financial security and professional confidence needed to show up fully every day, getting these rising leaders to even—and far beyond.
My entire life has been dedicated to architecting opportunities where others see obstacles, and my commitment to this work remains stronger than ever. But transforming long-term economic mobility requires a collective effort, and real change happens when mission-aligned organizations and leaders step up together.
