What the Current Anti-DEI Climate Means for Elevate+ and the Nonprofit Sector

Over the past year, many nonprofit leaders have been navigating a shifting landscape. The current Presidential administration’s stance against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) has not only changed the national conversation, it has had very real, practical consequences for organizations working to expand opportunity.

At Elevate+, we exist because opportunity is not evenly distributed. Our work is simple in concept: provide underserved students with access to paid internships, mentorship, and professional development so they can compete on a more level playing field.

That work has not changed. But the environment around it has.

A Changing Funding Landscape

Elevate+ does not receive federal funding. On the surface, that might suggest we are insulated from policy changes. In reality, the opposite has been true.

As federal funding to many nonprofits has been reduced or redirected, organizations across the country have turned more heavily to private philanthropy to sustain their work. Foundations and donors, facing increased demand, are being asked to do more with the same or fewer resources.

The result is increased competition for funding.

We felt that shift in 2025. We secured fewer grants than in prior years, and those we did receive were often at lower levels. At the same time, individual giving declined. Taken together, our funding was down by more than 20 percent.

For an organization like Elevate+, that impact is not abstract. A significant portion of what we raise in one year funds intern wages for the following summer. A decline in 2025 directly increases pressure on our 2026 program and limits how many students we can support.

This is not unique to us. Across the nonprofit sector, many organizations are facing similar constraints, even as the need for their services grows.

The Quiet Impact on Student Access

Another effect has been less visible, but equally significant.

Recent pressure on universities, particularly in some states, has led to the scaling back or elimination of programs that support underserved students, including those focused on BIPOC and other marginalized populations.

For Elevate+, these programs have often served as critical bridges. They connect us to students who might otherwise never hear about our internships. They provide trusted relationships and on-campus champions who encourage students to apply.

When those programs disappear, the pipeline breaks.

In one state where we have operated successfully in the past, two university partners eliminated support structures that had previously helped us reach students. The impact was immediate. In 2026, we were able to fill only 2 of 10 available internship positions. Not because the need disappeared, and not because the students were not there, but because we no longer had an effective way to reach them.

That is the quiet consequence of this moment. Opportunity does not just shrink. It becomes harder to access, especially for those who already face barriers.

A Broader Sector Challenge

The nonprofit community is resilient. It always has been. But resilience does not mean immunity.

When funding tightens and access points close, organizations are forced to make difficult choices. Fewer programs. Fewer participants. Slower growth. In some cases, pulling back from communities that need support the most.

At the same time, the underlying issues these organizations address have not gone away. If anything, they have become more urgent.

This creates a widening gap between need and capacity.

Staying Grounded in the Mission

At Elevate+, our response is to stay focused on what we know works.

Paid internships change trajectories. They provide not just income, but experience, confidence, and access to professional networks. They help students move from potential to opportunity.

We have seen it time and time again.

That belief is unchanged. But sustaining and scaling that impact requires collective effort, especially in a climate where the systems that once supported access are under strain.

How MEND and Elevate+ Are Building Capacity and Developing Professionals Together

For more than four years, Meeting Essential Needs with Dignity ( MEND ) and Elevate+ have partnered around a shared belief: talent is everywhere, and when given opportunity and support, emerging professionals can make a meaningful impact. At MEND, that impact begins with dignity.

MEND ensures that families across Essex County have reliable access to fresh, healthy food and essential resources in ways that honor dignity, choice, and the voice of their neighbors. As a centralized Fresh Food Hub, MEND sources, stores, and distributes fresh produce and pantry staples to a network of local food pantries and community partners. Through mobile markets, home deliveries, and collaborative initiatives, the organization strengthens the regional food ecosystem while expanding access to nutritious food.

Hosting Elevate+ interns has become an integral part of that ecosystem.

“ We saw mission alignment between our organizations ,” says Keily Hayes of MEND. “ Both are working to fill gaps, reduce disparities, and center dignity. ”

Real Work. Real Impact.

Elevate+ interns at MEND are not observers. They are contributors.

Over the years, interns have:

Helped run community food distribution events
Sorted and packed food at the warehouse
Overseen and trained volunteers
Translated survey materials and responses
Entered and analyzed data
Created flyers and one-pagers
Developed recipes
Mapped community assets
Built consolidated resource directories

One intern gathered information about inclusive farmers markets across the county — identifying which accepted SNAP, WIC, and Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers. After verifying the accuracy of the information, the intern created a comprehensive directory that made these resources more accessible to families in need.

Another supported translation and data entry for surveys, ensuring community voices were accurately captured.

One former intern even became a regular volunteer at monthly food distribution events after her internship ended, bringing not just energy, but her own vehicle to help support the work.

“Elevate+ interns have helped us refine materials, launch new initiatives, improve systems, and complete delayed projects,” Keily explains. “There have been several instances where interns were able to develop summaries and high-level overviews that made our work more accessible to more people.”

Beyond operational impact, the interns have strengthened MEND’s culture.

“They bring incredible energy to our space,” Keily says. “Ideas, excitement, and unique experiences. They also bring strengths straight from the classroom that we’ve all been able to learn from.”

Mentorship That Builds Confidence

Keily has served as a mentor to the Elevate+ interns working at MEND, and she has seen remarkable growth in a short period of time.

“Each of the interns we’ve worked with has shown tremendous growth,” she says. “I credit that growth to their genuine excitement to learn and contribute.”

Interns are encouraged to name both the skills they want to develop and the strengths they already bring. That balance — supporting growth while affirming existing talent — builds confidence quickly.

“It’s incredible to see how mentoring and a supportive environment can quickly bring a shy and quiet student to a confident contributor,” Keily reflects.

She has remained in contact, to some degree, with three of the four interns MEND has hosted — a testament to relationships built on mutual respect and shared purpose.

Why Paid Internships Matter

When asked whether Elevate+ strengthens the nonprofit and local workforce ecosystem, Keily’s answer is clear:

“Yes, significantly.”

Nonprofits need capable hands. Students need experience. But unpaid internships create barriers.

“Interns being compensated for their time and work supports their ability to gain experience, continue through school, and build connections for the future,” she explains. “ It’s a win-win .”

When asked whether MEND could offer paid internships without Elevate+ wage funding, Keily acknowledged they might only be able to offer unpaid or credit-only roles.

That distinction matters.

Without funding, paid opportunities often do not exist. And without paid opportunities, many students from low-income backgrounds cannot afford to participate.

The Elevate+ model bridges that gap.

A Holistic Approach

Keily believes Elevate+ stands apart because of its holistic commitment to students.

“They take a more holistic view of interns and their experiences. They demonstrate a commitment to supporting the unique needs of each student. They ask for feedback and incorporate it into their program. They are incredibly responsive.”

This responsiveness benefits nonprofits as well.

“The team at Elevate+ centers dignity in how they support interns and collaborate with nonprofit partners to understand their unique needs and capacity,” Keily says. “The model uplifts students while strengthening the organizations they serve.”

Handoff Wins Community Impact Award for Elevate+ Fundraiser

We are thrilled to share that Handoff has won the Community Impact Award at the Corporate Housing Providers Association (CHPA) Tower of Excellence Gala, recognizing its extraordinary leadership in building and running Miles of Impact in support of Elevate+.

This honor is well deserved.

From the very beginning, Miles of Impact was not simply a sponsorship or a collaboration. It was a vision brought forward by Handoff’s founder and CEO, Anthony Gonzalez, who is also a Trustee of Elevate+. Anthony imagined a fitness-driven fundraiser that would convert everyday movement into paid internship opportunities for underserved students.

That idea became something much bigger.

From Concept to Impact

Handoff did far more than lend its name to a good cause. They built Miles of Impact from the ground up.

They led strategy, branding, campaign infrastructure, outreach, digital storytelling, and internal mobilization. They designed the platform. They rallied partners. They activated the mobility community. They treated the fundraiser not as a side initiative, but as a core expression of who they are as a company.

As we shared in our formal endorsement of their nomination: “Handoff did far more than support Miles of Impact — they made it possible.”

Without their leadership, Elevate+ would have lost thousands of dollars in internship funding. More importantly, students would have lost access to transformative opportunities.

Walking the Talk

What stands out most is not only what Handoff built, but how they showed up.

Every member of the Handoff team participated in Miles of Impact. They did not just design the campaign behind the scenes. They logged miles. They encouraged partners. They embodied the mission. Their authenticity resonated deeply across the corporate housing and mobility industries.

At Elevate+, we often speak about opportunity. Handoff turned that word into action.

Real Results, Real Students

Because of Handoff’s leadership, Miles of Impact has already funded eight paid internships.

Eight students who might otherwise have been excluded from formative professional experiences were able to access paid, career-building roles. Eight young professionals strengthened their confidence, networks, and long-term earning potential.

Research from the National Association of Colleges and Employers shows that completing internships can increase lifetime earnings by at least $1.5 million per student. That means this partnership has already helped unlock more than $10 million in projected lifetime economic mobility for marginalized young people.

That is what community impact looks like.

A Model for the Industry

The Tower of Excellence Awards celebrate the people and initiatives shaping the future of corporate housing. By recognizing Handoff’s work, CHPA affirmed that meaningful impact belongs at the center of our industry’s future.

Miles of Impact is now a repeatable, scalable model because Handoff built it to create long-term change, not short-term visibility. They demonstrated that companies in mobility and corporate housing can play a powerful role in strengthening the very workforce that will one day support and lead this industry.

Elevate+ Elects Jeff Kaufman to Board of Trustees

Elevate to Even Plus (Elevate+) is proud to announce the election of Jeff Kaufman to its Board of Trustees.

Jeff brings more than four decades of global business leadership and a lifelong commitment to mentoring. He spent 44 years with PwC, including a 30-year active career as a Partner specializing in International Tax and Business Development before retiring in 2011. Shortly thereafter, he returned to the firm as a consultant, leading the development and global rollout of PwC’s sales methodology across more than 35 countries. His work included a year based in Singapore supporting teams throughout Southeast Asia, as well as decades of coaching teams pursuing complex client engagements.

Mentorship has been a defining theme of Jeff’s career. During his 22 years as an active Partner, he mentored 20 professionals who went on to become Partners themselves. Over the past 20 years, he has volunteered extensively as a career mentor, coaching hundreds of job seekers across industries and age groups, with a particular focus on practical, effective networking strategies that help job seekers open doors, stand out in interviews, and turn opportunities into job offers. He has served for six years as an active coach with the Fountain Baptist Church Networking Ministry and is currently completing a book on mentoring, distilling decades of experience to help others engage more intentionally and effectively in the mentoring process — both as mentors and mentees.

Jeff has already made a meaningful impact at Elevate+. Over the past several years, he has been a highly engaged volunteer , creating and delivering the Elevate+ Intern Masterclass on Communication, leading the Mentor Workshop last summer, serving on the Career Journey Mentor (CJM) Steering Committee, and stepping forward to lead onboarding training for CJM volunteer mentors.

“ I am thrilled and honored to join the board of Elevate+, ” said Jeff Kaufman. “The organization is driving change that improves the lives of each student it supports. I am excited to work alongside the rest of the board to continue growing its programs. The Elevate+ mission is my personal passion, and I look forward to contributing my skills and expertise to help expand its impact.”

Emergency Room Technician | Future Physician

Today, Lizbeth Polanco works on the front lines of healthcare as an Emergency Room Technician. She monitors cardiac rhythms, takes vital signs, assists during emergencies, and alerts nurses to changes in patient condition. The work is fast-paced, demanding, and often high stress. It is also deeply meaningful.

Lizbeth traces much of her clarity and confidence back to the summer of 2022, when she served as a Resource Center Intern with the New London Homeless Hospitality Center through Elevate+. At the time, she was a student at the University of Connecticut, where she has since graduated. What began as a summer internship would become a defining step in her journey toward medicine.

Showing Up Where People Are Overlooked

When Lizbeth reflects on her internship, one experience stands out.

As a Resource Center Intern, she was responsible for outreach related to the MyHomeCT program, driving to rural communities and delivering detailed flyers to town halls and post offices, places where access to information can be limited. At the time, it felt like a small task. Just making sure the right information reached the right places.

Not long after, a couple reached out after seeing one of those flyers. They later emailed their gratitude and praised the outreach efforts to the Connecticut Housing Authority. That outreach helped them avoid foreclosure and keep their home.

“Meaningful impact doesn’t always come from grand gestures,” Lizbeth reflects. “Sometimes it comes from showing up where people are often overlooked and making sure they are supported.”

The experience reshaped how she sees service. It was not just about individual assistance. It was about systems, communication, and access.

“I Can Do This.”

Another moment affirmed her path.

A Spanish-speaking gentleman came into the center visibly distressed about his living situation. As the only Spanish speaker on staff that day, Lizbeth stepped in. He was overwhelmed and unsure of his options. She listened carefully, worked through his concerns step by step, and helped him understand available resources.

By the end of their conversation, his demeanor had shifted. He felt relief. He felt heard.

Walking away, Lizbeth realized something important.

“I can do this.”

That moment strengthened her confidence in high-stress environments and affirmed her ability to support people during vulnerable moments, skills that now translate directly into the emergency department.

From Internship to Impact

After her internship concluded, Lizbeth continued working with the New London Homeless Hospitality Center in different capacities. She remained part-time during school and helped more than 500 individuals avoid eviction through the UniteCT program.

The internship did more than give her experience. It gave her relationships. It gave her systems knowledge. It gave her professional footing.

“Without this internship, I would not have been able to build the connections I currently have,” she says.

Her mentor, Rain Daugherty, played an essential role in that journey. Clear, detail-oriented, and deeply supportive, Rain celebrated Lizbeth’s wins and provided steady guidance. When Lizbeth helped save the MyHomeCT family’s home, it was Rain who forwarded the grateful email and made sure she understood the impact of her work.

Rain later offered her a job. Lizbeth accepted without hesitation.

They remain connected today. Rain has written multiple letters of recommendation and continues to support Lizbeth as she prepares for medical school.

Translating Service into Medicine

As an Emergency Room Technician, Lizbeth’s internship lessons surface daily.

She strongly agrees that her Elevate+ experience built her confidence interacting with people in high-stress and service-oriented environments. It influenced her decision to pursue healthcare. It strengthened her ability to remain composed in crisis.

But perhaps most importantly, it shaped how she understands medicine.

Her internship exposed her to systems-level work and government assistance programs. She saw firsthand how policy, communication, and access shape people’s lives.

“Being an effective healthcare professional means understanding systems and being a provider who not only treats disease but also advocates for equitable access to resources,” she explains.

That systems awareness now informs how she approaches patient care.

Looking Forward

Today, Lizbeth continues to build her clinical experience while preparing for medical school. She has participated in medical service trips to Sri Lanka and Ghana and hopes to continue serving globally in the future.

When asked to describe the impact Elevate+ had on her journey, she puts it simply:

“Elevate+ gave me the tools and connections necessary to turn my passion for helping others into meaningful action.”

Her advice to students considering an internship?

“Take the chance, even if the opportunity isn’t exactly what you would normally pursue. Sometimes the experiences you least expect end up having the biggest impact.”

For Lizbeth, a summer internship became something much more. It became preparation. It became perspective. It became purpose.

The 2026 Elevate+ Internship Placement Cycle is Happening!

The 2026 internship season is officially underway at Elevate+

We’re excited to share where we are in the process—and what students can expect in the weeks ahead. Each year, our paid summer internships open doors for young people who are eager to gain meaningful work experience, build confidence, and launch their career journeys. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how the cycle works and how we support our students every step of the way.

40 Opportunities Across the Country—and Growing

We’ve already distributed job descriptions for approximately 40 paid internship roles to our talent-sourcing partners across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Ohio, California, and Washington, DC. These partners—schools, community programs, and youth-serving organizations—play a crucial role in connecting Elevate+ with the students we’re designed to serve: motivated young people from underserved communities who are ready for a transformative professional experience.

These roles span nonprofit and mission-driven organizations, offering students the chance to explore career paths while making an impact in their communities.

Application Portal Opens Later This Month

The Elevate+ application window opens later in January. Students can apply online from their phones, laptops, or desktops, and may select up to three internship opportunities that match their interests.

The application deadline is at the end of February , giving students several weeks to submit strong, thoughtful applications.

To support them, we’ve made the experience simple and accessible—our online form and guidance resources live directly on our website.

Information Sessions Designed for Student Success

To help students put their best foot forward, Elevate+ will host two virtual information sessions . These sessions give prospective applicants a clear picture of what makes our program unique, including:

Weekly professional development workshops
Networking opportunities and a Role Model Speaker Series
Professional headshot photoshoots
Dedicated mentors who support students throughout the summer

We also walk students through what makes a strong application, what a polished resume looks like, and how to use the resource hub on our website—including tip sheets, sample applications, and videos.

Students leave these sessions feeling informed, encouraged, and far better prepared to apply.

Host Organizations Begin Reviewing in Late February

At the end of February, Elevate+ forwards completed applications to each host organization. From there, hosts manage their own review and interview process, selecting candidates whose interests and strengths align with their mission and work.

Because our hosts are partners in our students’ success, this step is more than just hiring—it’s match-making. We work closely with them to ensure that every student receives a meaningful, supportive placement.

Formalizing the Experience: MOUs for Every Student

Students who receive internship offers sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Elevate+ . The MOU clarifies:

What Elevate+ expects from each intern (stay engaged, put in best effort, and participate in the professional development sessions)
What students can expect from Elevate+ (ongoing support, funded wages, and check-ins)
What they can expect from their host organization (a structured work experience and a dedicated mentor)

This simple but important document helps align expectations and sets each student up for a successful summer. And after completing the MOU, each student receives a $100 "sign-on bonus." This payment is a stipend to provide them with funds before they receive their first paycheck.

Preparing Students for the Workplace

Before the internship begins, all selected students attend one of our Job Readiness sessions—intensive, practical workshops that prepare them for their first professional work environment.

These sessions cover workplace communication, professionalism, time management, teamwork, and the confidence-building skills that help our students feel like they belong. For many of our young people, this is the first time they’re stepping into a professional setting. Our goal is to make sure they walk in ready, equipped, and empowered.

Leadership development expert adds strength to Elevate+ Board

Elevate to Even Plus (Elevate+), a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to transformative, paid internship opportunities for underserved students, is proud to announce the appointment of Miriam T. Nelson, Ph.D. to its Board of Trustees.

Dr. Nelson is a Senior Partner at Korn Ferry and an accomplished Industrial-Organizational Psychologist specializing in leadership assessment, selection, and talent strategy. She has spent her career helping organizations make sharper, fairer decisions about people through evidence-based, real-world assessment approaches. A lifelong New Jersey native, she brings a grounded perspective to issues of access, opportunity, and workforce readiness.

“I am excited to contribute to the amazing work Elevate+ is doing,” said Dr. Nelson. “I am honored to bring my assessment expertise, long-term commitment to talent development, and personal appreciation for the power of internships to the work of the Elevate+ Board.”

Beyond her client work, Dr. Nelson mentors emerging I-O psychologists, supports a veterans coaching program, volunteers as an English-language partner for a colleague in Ukraine, and participates in an international professional cohort focused on cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration across differences.

“Miriam will add great value to Elevate+ in the boardroom and beyond,” said Stacey Slater , Board Chair of Elevate+. “I look forward to working with her.”

Access Matters More Than Ever, Too.

In Her Campus at UCF , writer Alia Velasquez describes the silent toll of unpaid internships with striking clarity:

“There is a level of privilege that comes with the ability to work an unpaid internship. It requires one to have financial support to fund living expenses and school while being unpaid. Many students don’t have this support and are unable to take these meaningful, unpaid internships. With a huge financial barrier, these programs create an unfair system. You need money to enter into an unpaid internship, but you need an unpaid internship to be offered a full-time job.”

This is the trap our students know all too well.
A maze where every turn depends on money they do not have.
A system where talent is abundant, but opportunity is rationed.

This is exactly why Elevate+ exists.

We work with students who are full of grit, heart, and ambition, but who often face overwhelming financial barriers. A meaningful internship can change the arc of a young person’s life, yet only if they can afford to take it .

That’s why every internship we support is paid. Not symbolically paid. Not “stipend-if-we-can-find-it” paid. Fully, fairly paid.

But the paycheck is just the starting point.

Gearing up for a great summer ahead

As Elevate+ looks ahead to Summer 2026, we’re excited to begin preparations for another season of creating transformative, paid internship opportunities for students from underserved communities.

This fall, we’re holding information sessions in late October and November for organizations interested in hosting Elevate+ interns next summer. These sessions will provide an overview of our program, highlight success stories from past years, and outline how to get involved as a host partner.

Partnering with Elevate+

Elevate+ funds intern wages for nonprofit host organizations , making it easy for community-based nonprofits to provide meaningful, paid work experiences. For-profit hosts are invited to self-fund their interns’ wages , while their students benefit from the same rich professional development programming that sets Elevate+ apart—our skill-building workshops, role model conversation series, and networking events.

Strengthening Our Curriculum

Behind the scenes, Elevate+ trustees and volunteers are currently reviewing and enhancing our professional development curriculum. Their goal is to ensure our programming remains relevant, impactful, and fully integrated across all components—creating a more cohesive and holistic experience for our interns. This continuous improvement means Elevate+ interns will have even greater opportunities to build confidence, develop key workplace skills, and connect with mentors and peers.

A New Way to Get Involved: Career Journey Mentors

We’re also thrilled to introduce a new volunteer opportunity for those eager to make a lasting impact. Our Career Journey Mentor program pairs volunteers with Elevate+ alumni for up to one year following their internships. Mentors provide light-touch guidance to help graduates leverage their internship experience as they pursue their next opportunity—whether that’s another internship, a job, or continued education. The commitment is modest, but the impact can be life-changing.

Miles of Impact — Elevate+’s month-long peer-to-peer fitness fundraiser — turns every mile (and every movement) into opportunity.

Our goal is simple but powerful: log 1,000 miles together and raise $25,000 to support paid internships for students from underserved communities . These formative experiences help young people build confidence, professional networks, and brighter futures.

How It Works

Participants can walk, run, bike, swim — or even stretch their way toward our shared goal. For those who prefer yoga, HIIT workouts, or weightlifting, we’ve created a conversion chart that translates your activity into miles. Every bit of effort moves us closer to our target!

You can also fundraise through your personal network , with a suggested goal of $250 per participant — but any amount helps. And if you’d rather support the cause from the sidelines, direct donations are warmly welcomed .

Why It Matters

Elevate+ is currently behind in its fundraising for the year. Reaching our $25,000 Miles of Impact goal will provide essential support for next summer’s transformative internships, helping us continue to level the playing field for talented students who simply need access to opportunity.

Growth, Impact, and Inspiration

As summer draws to a close, we celebrate the incredible group of Elevate+ interns who have spent the past several months making their mark on organizations across our network. Most will wrap up their internships by tomorrow, but the skills they’ve built, the relationships they’ve formed, and the contributions they’ve made will have a lasting impact far beyond this season.

From day one, our interns dove into their roles—embracing challenges, taking on new responsibilities, and finding confidence in their abilities. One student reflected, “Honestly, this was a great experience. I felt a part of something bigger despite my self doubts—doubts in which I have gotten rid of.”

Others returned for a second summer, eager to build on their prior experiences. “It was my second year working the Vivid Dreamers camp and I was very happy to be back!” Another shared, “My internship this year was a very different experience than the year before. We had more children join the program and since one of the regular staff was on maternity leave, I had to step up and be more active with the behind the scenes of the camp. I enjoyed every part of my time at the Lyman Allyn.”

Our host mentors echoed this enthusiasm, praising their interns’ professionalism, initiative, and adaptability:

Popular sessions included our Job Readiness class—equipping students with the skills to confidently enter the workforce—and our Role Model Speaker Series , which connected them with inspiring professionals who shared their career journeys and insights. They also attended a spring Candidate Strategies for Success session to prepare them for their interviews, a masterclass series that covered personal branding and effective communication , and several networking events.

As one student put it, “I am truly grateful for this internship opportunity and the valuable experience I have gained throughout the summer. I can’t thank this program enough!”

How the Internet is Changing the Way We Connect and Find Opportunities

Not long ago, networking meant attending formal events, exchanging business cards, or striking up conversations over coffee. While those traditional methods still hold value, the digital age has completely transformed how we build relationships, personally and professionally. With just a few clicks, I can now connect with industry leaders, potential mentors, and future employers from anywhere in the world.

Whether you’re a student like me looking for an internship, a recent graduate entering the workforce, or a professional seeking new opportunities, online networking has opened up new pathways that were once difficult or even impossible to access.

Why Networking Matters

Networking remains one of the most powerful tools for personal and professional growth. It opens doors! In my experience, it means finding and connecting with people who inspire you, who are where you want to be, or who are doing interesting work. The internships that I have participated in were all found through networking.

New Job Opportunities: Many roles are filled through personal connections.
Mentorship and Guidance: Learning from someone who’s already been where you want to go can fast-track your success.

Thanks to tools like LinkedIn, Slack, and even Instagram, I can connect with others without requiring them to be in the same room or even in the same city as me. Now, thanks to platforms like LinkedIn, Slack, Instagram, and TikTok, I can engage with people across industries and even time zones.

Reach out to people constantly: Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself or ask questions. Though it may be hard, it can make a difference!
Join online communities or events, such as LinkedIn groups and virtual sessions, to connect with new people and expand your professional network.
Find jobs through your network: Your network is often the first to connect you to a new opportunity.
Stay in touch and keep connected: This speaks for itself; always keep your connections close, they are all valuable.

Your network is no longer limited by who you know in person.

How Online Networking Leads to Opportunities

Many people are finding jobs through their connections, sometimes before roles are even posted. Recruiters use online searches to find candidates, and these searches can carry more weight than cold applications.

Don't just connect: reach out with a purpose. Using the note option on LinkedIn is something I always make sure to do, as it shows your “why.”
Like, comment, share, and join the conversation: Add your point of view. I find that I am more engaged when I can add my ideas.
Be yourself: You don't have to be perfect to show your interest or share your goals; it's not always easy.
Share: Letting people in can help you build strong, lasting relationships. Don’t be afraid to boast about yourself!

The Elevate+ Board Adds Economic Mobility Expert as Trustee

Elevate+, committed to expanding access to paid internships and professional development for underserved students, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kristina Testa-Buzzee to its Board of Trustees.

Dr. Testa-Buzzee brings over 20 years of experience advancing economic mobility through innovative workforce development strategies. She currently serves as Grants Performance Manager at the Connecticut Office of Workforce Strategy, where she works with federally funded, multi-sector training programs across the state. Based in Norwalk, Connecticut, Dr. Testa-Buzzee’s deep local knowledge and statewide leadership reflect Elevate+’s growing investment in the region and its commitment to scaling its programs in the state.

“Kristina brings a rare combination of systems thinking and community-grounded leadership,” said Stacey Slater, Chair of the Elevate+ Board of Trustees. “She understands how to build cross-sector coalitions that create real pathways to opportunity, and we are fortunate to have her perspective at our table.”

Throughout her career, Dr. Testa-Buzzee has held key leadership roles in higher education and government, including Chief Regional Workforce Development Officer for Connecticut State Community College and Dean of Workforce Development at Norwalk Community College. She has built and sustained high-impact programs focused on career pathways, adult education, and immigrant workforce readiness—experience that closely aligns with Elevate+’s mission to level the playing field for underserved students.

“We’re proud to welcome Kristina to the Board, not only for her incredible expertise but because she represents our deepening commitment to students in Connecticut,” said Andrew Walker, Founding Executive Director of Elevate+. “As we expand our presence there, her insight into local workforce needs and institutional partnerships will be instrumental to our impact.”

As we reach the midpoint of summer, we're excited to share that Elevate+ interns are not just participating—they’re thriving. From nonprofit offices in New Jersey to global tech firms in Texas, our students are building real-world skills, growing in confidence, and forging meaningful professional connections.

Investing in Growth: Professional Development at the Core

This summer, we’ve expanded our professional development programming with engaging, targeted offerings designed to meet interns where they are—and help them grow into where they’re going. Every student began their journey with Candidate Strategies for Success and Job Readiness training, giving them the tools to make strong first impressions and contribute with confidence from day one.

Since then, we’ve hosted a virtual intern meet-and-greet, masterclasses on Personal Branding and Dynamic Communication , and welcomed our first Role Model speaker: performing arts educator and entrepreneur Shirel Jones. These sessions have been more than informative—they’ve been energizing. As one intern put it, Elevate+ taught them to “embrace discomfort,” adding, “it’s where the most growth happens.”

We also launched our first in-person networking event of the season with a headshot session and dinner in New London, CT, where interns, mentors, and supporters came together for connection and celebration. Next up: Ohio and New Jersey events later this month!

A Guide for Thriving in Your First Internship

Starting an internship can be both scary and exciting; you may even feel a case of impostor syndrome. You’re stepping into a new space, trying to make a good impression, figuring out many things as you go. It's a lot, but a rewarding way to learn about the type of professional you want to be. Whether you are entering your first year as an intern or stacking up internships like books over the last few summers, here are a few things that helped me make the most of the experience, from surviving day one with little knowledge to being able to lead with confidence.

Understand Expectations

You are setting yourself up for success.

Ask questions. Ask Again. No one expects you to have all the answers.
Schedule check-ins with your manager. It helps keep you and your goals on track.
Figure out what a “win” can look like for your role.

One conversation can lead you to a new project to jump into!

Take Initiative

Showing initiative shows that you are willing to learn.

Finished a task early? Ask what else you can jump in on.
See a problem? Think through a fix. Bring solutions, not problems.
Ask for feedback so that you can apply it in the future.

Some of my favorite projects I have worked on have been the result of my taking initiative.

Build Relationships

Networking is a vital.

Introduce yourself, yes, even if it’s awkward.
Have an “elevator pitch” ready just in case. You never know who can help you on this journey.
Go to networking events. Seek people on LinkedIn to build your circle.

Keep connections alive! The mentor who helped guide my decision in solidifying my role at Elevate+ was someone I met through a past internship.

Time Management

You can’t give your best if you’re constantly overwhelmed.

Break your day up. Use Google Calendar, reminders on your phone, and ask Alexa to set an alarm. There are so many ways to stay on top of your time.
Prioritize what needs to be done now vs later.
If you are feeling behind, speak up. People are more understanding when you communicate.

I spent hours stressing needlessly over a project that, in the end, wasn't that big a deal. If only I had asked my manager, I could have saved myself the stress.

Learn and Grow

Internships are about learning and professional success.

Take notes; do not rely solely on your memory.
Try something new, even if it is out of your comfort zone.
Reflect: What did I learn today? What do I wish to know more about? What can I do differently tomorrow?

Challenging myself to learn a new skill that wasn’t in my job description led me to discover my new favorite skill, which I can now bring to my next role.

Seek Feedback

Feedback is vital for growth.

Actively seek feedback from your manager.
Be open to constructive criticism and view it as a learning opportunity.
Applying what you are learning shows that you are growing.

Seek feedback, it doesn’t just come from your managers. Ask your peers; it is equally important to ask them the right questions. Formal or informal feedback all has value!

Internships are more than what you can put on your resume. From what I have experienced, this is the space to figure out what you are searching for, what challenges you, and what path may be right for you. So ask questions. Always give that awkward intro. Pitch the idea that may be a little crazy. Show your growth. Because you are more than “just an intern,” we are future leaders in the making.

Talent Sourcing Partners: The Unsung Heroes Behind Elevate+ Intern Success

At Elevate+, we believe that every student deserves access to formative, paid work experiences that build confidence, spark ambition, and open doors. Vital to our success are the organizations that help us find the remarkable students we serve: our Talent Sourcing Partners.

Going to Where the Students Are

Elevate+ works with a growing network of high schools, colleges, and community-based programs across the country to identify talented students from low-income and marginalized communities. We go to where the students are—partnering with organizations that already have deep relationships with young people working hard to overcome systemic barriers.

To be eligible for an Elevate+ internship, students must meet key criteria: they must come be marginalized and from a low-income background, and they must demonstrate achievement or potential in any aspect of their lives—whether academic, leadership, work ethic, or personal growth. We depend on our partners to connect us to students meeting our criteria. We then introduce the students to the Elevate+ community of host partners providing internship opportunities.

Two of our original talent partners are KIPP NJ , a high-performing charter school network in Newark, and The PEP Program , a Summit-based enrichment initiative that helps students get into college. The Elevate+ network has grown to include over 25 partners across New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Ohio, Tennessee, Colorado, Texas, and California. Partners we’ve added include Cleveland State University , the University of Colorado Denver , Fisk University , Drew University , and The Academy 365 , to name just a few. Two of our most recent additions are West Side High School in Newark and CT State Community College in Norwalk .

“Being part of an underserved population can negatively impact development during and after college. Elevate+ provides both leverage and equity through its mission and programming. These internships allow students to build connections and refine their skills—whether they land the internship or not. The process alone is transformative. It boosts confidence, pushes students out of their comfort zones, and teaches them how to navigate professional environments with support at every step. It’s a true team effort—with cheerleaders all along the way.”

What do you like best about working with Elevate+?

“The authenticity of the staff. Elevate+ is more than what it says on its website. They deeply care—not just about internship placements, but about how students feel and how they’re doing overall. They stay in touch even after summer ends. Andrew and Carolyn regularly check in about students because they genuinely want to see them thrive in all aspects of their lives. It feels less like a partnership and more like we’re on the same team. Choosing to work with Elevate+ was one of my first decisions as Executive Director—and it’s still one of the best.”

Are there any standout intern stories?

“Every one of the 19 Higher Edge students who’ve participated has a story worth telling, but Leslie’s journey stands out. She interned at New London Landmarks in 2022 as an Oral History Intern and returned the next year to take on film and editing projects. Her work was so strong, it helped secure her admission—and a full scholarship—to Emerson College in Boston. Her experience, grit, and passion set her apart. Now, she’s thriving and on track to graduate in 2026. We can’t wait to see what she does next.”

“So many! One student who wants to pursue HR landed an internship at Homeless Solutions that included both finance and HR responsibilities. She was nervous at first but ended up loving the experience. Another intern, studying social work, spent the summer at Summit Housing Authority—learning firsthand about community needs and social services. And one of our earliest Elevate+ students worked remotely for Charity Navigator, gaining experience in the nonprofit sector and learning how to present professionally—even over Zoom.”

Building a Future: How Elevate+ Helped Neema David Turn Challenge into Purpose

In her young life, Neema David has overcome a lot. In her childhood, her family escaped the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo and lived in a refugee camp in Uganda before eventually immigrating to Cleveland, Ohio. Her small stature belies her fierce determination, evidenced by Neema learning English (on top of several other languages she already spoke), adjusting to a new culture, and supporting her family. As a student at Cleveland State University , Neema was also working as a caregiver and volunteering in her community. Her journey continued through the Elevate+ internship program, where she was matched with nonprofit Global Cleveland and received dedicated mentorship and hands-on experience . As a participant in the program, Neema immersed herself in all it offered, gaining invaluable insights and honing essential skills.

As an Outreach Coordinator at Global Cleveland , Neema connected with diverse communities as she supported the organization’s mission of bringing opportunities to international people . "My day-to-day responsibilities included organizing outreach events, building relationships with local and international groups, and assisting with program development. I also conducted research on community needs and collaborated with team members to design initiatives that promote inclusivity and engagement," she told us.

Neema’s time at Global Cleveland was instrumental in her professional and personal growth. She gained firsthand experience in outreach and community engagement, which strengthened her confidence and leadership abilities. As she reflects on this experience, Neema is particularly grateful to her Global Cleveland colleagues. " The whole team made a lasting impression on me, but especially my mentor and supervisor, Evan Chwalek . He was incredibly supportive and guided me through every step of my internship. I still reach out to him because of the lasting impact he had on my development. His insights, advice, and encouragement made a huge difference in how I approached my work and how I viewed my career path. His mentorship truly helped shape my confidence and leadership skills, and I’m grateful for the ongoing support."

Neema's journey has continued to progress, reflecting her ongoing dedication and growth. She recently received the T op Performer award by ComForCare, where she has continued to work as a care giver to the elderly. In the fall, she will begin graduate school to pursue a Master of Public Administration degree . She added, "Since my internship with Elevate+, I’ve successfully secured additional volunteer leadership roles and networking opportunities that I attribute to the experiences I gained through the program.”

From Construction to Corporate Success: Francisco's Elevate+ Journey

Before joining Elevate+, Francisco Velez was attending college while working part-time with a very busy schedule. "I was balancing multiple responsibilities. I worked as a construction laborer while also attending school full-time as a Business Administration major. I also served as an assistant wrestling coach." He took something away from all of these experiences - the value of hard work, dedication, and community engagement, but, he added, "I was eager to gain professional experience that aligned with my interests in business administration."

Francisco recognized that practical work experience would improve his chances of working in his preferred field. "The inspiration to apply for this internship came from my desire to build a meaningful career and connect with mentors who could guide me," Francisco shared. His decision to join the Elevate+ program would prove to be a pivotal step in his career journey.

During his time with Elevate+, Francisco interned at Destination Cleveland , the non-profit destination marketing and management organization for Cuyahoga County, where he played an essential role in supporting its Human Resources, IT, Operations, and Finance functions. "My day-to-day responsibilities included collaborating with HR, Operations, IT, and Finance teams on various projects, applying analytical skills to interpret survey data, and supporting strategic planning," he explained. "I also assisted in developing renovation plans and led sustainability efforts by promoting recycling and paperless processes while handling confidential information." His work directly contributed to the organization’s success and mission. "As someone from Cleveland, this project resonated deeply with me because I saw how these changes could reduce waste and benefit the community I call home," he said.

While the Elevate+ internship ended in August, Destination Cleveland asked Francisco to stay on, working through the following December.

The professional development resources offered by Elevate+ were transformative for Francisco. "The training sessions and networking events taught me how to present myself professionally and build meaningful connections," he noted. These skills became invaluable as he began networking with industry professionals and exploring future career opportunities.

Reflecting on his journey, Francisco credits Elevate+ with providing the foundation for his success. " Elevate+ was the launchpad for my career journey. It gave me the confidence to navigate professional environments and the tools to excel in them," he said. He was also grateful to be able to earn money over the summer while gaining transferable skills, something made possible by Elevate+ donors who help fund internship wages.

"My internship reinforced my desire to pursue a career where I can combine my skills in business administration, human resources, and international business to make a meaningful impact. Working at Destination Cleveland allowed me to see how strategic collaboration across departments can drive innovation and create positive change. It also inspired me to seek leadership roles that align with my passion for community engagement and sustainable practices. Academically, it strengthened my commitment to excelling in my studies and gaining additional certifications that will help me contribute more effectively to similar organizations in the future."

The summer following his Elevate+ internship, Francisco moved on to intern with the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. Francisco also credits his internship experience with helping him secure a position in a rotational program at CINTAS after graduation, a milestone he is particularly proud of. "Elevate+ opened doors I didn’t even know existed," Francisco emphasized.

Francisco’s advice to future interns is simple but impactful: "Take full advantage of every opportunity the program offers. Ask questions, connect with mentors, and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone."

Today, Francisco continues to apply the skills he developed during his internship in his professional role. He remains passionate about leveraging his business expertise to make a difference in his community. Elevate+ Supercharges Summer Internship Opportunities for 2025!

Big news! Elevate+ is rolling out an incredible slate of summer internship opportunities for 2025, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Since last fall, we’ve been working tirelessly with our powerhouse network of partner organizations to build a dynamic and impactful program for students. Thanks to their dedication, most job descriptions were locked in by December using the Elevate+ online form—that makes it asy for students to explore and secure internships that align with their goals. With applications now rolling in, we anticipate filling most positions by the end of March.

This summer, Elevate+ is offering 41 game-changing internship positions , with 30 spots at mission-driven nonprofits and 11 opportunities in the corporate world. And we’re not stopping there—conversations are already underway to add even more partners, meaning the list of available internships could grow in the coming weeks!

Our Host Partners Value Their Interns

Most of our partners continue to host interns year after year, a testament to the contirbutions the interns make to their organizations. One of our longest-standing partners, Family Promise , is back for its fifth consecutive summer of hosting Elevate+ interns. As their Chief Operating Officer Shari Competiello puts it:

"We're excited to be partnering with Elevate+ again this year to fill another internship. We’ve been so impressed by all of the applicants Elevate+ presented to us, and the interns we’ve hired have consistently made a significant impact on our organization. We're looking forward to seeing the many contributions future interns will make at Family Promise."

Supporting Our Interns and Expanding Access

At Elevate+, we believe in fair pay for meaningful work . That’s why we provide small grants to nonprofit hosts, helping to offset intern wages by contributing $17.50 per hour for up to 250 hours. We also invest in our interns directly , offering a $100 sign-on bonus and a $200 completion bonus to recognize their hard work and dedication.

However, our ambitions exceed our current funding. Right now, we have more internship opportunities than we can fund, meaning some hosts who requested multiple interns will only be able to fill one position. These unfunded internships represent incredible opportunities that will go unfilled—unless we can bridge the gap .

Meet Cyreema Marshall - Another Intern Success Story

As a freshman at Emory University, Newark's Cyreema Marshall was brimming with curiosity and ambition, ready to take her first steps into the professional world. Little did she know, Elevate+ would open doors she never imagined. "Ms. Amato at North Star Academy connected me with this incredible program, and I’m so grateful she did," Cyreema shared. Her decision to join Elevate+ became a defining step in her academic and professional journey.

As part of the program, Cyreema interned with two organizations over two summers: Discovery Orchestra and HTTV. At Discovery Orchestra, she served as an administrative intern, where her work entailed reorganizing YouTube videos, creating promotional material, and developing a database of featured music and musicians. Through her work there, she developed a keen understanding of organizational management.

Her second placement, with HTTV, had a profound influence on her career aspirations. Cyreema learned to storyboard, edit, and refine video content, mastering technical tools that would later prove invaluable in her career. "Being able to edit my own video with HTTV and see the final product made me realize that media production was something I wanted to pursue," she said. This hands-on experience not only honed her technical skills but also ignited a passion for storytelling through media.

The professional development resources offered by Elevate+ were equally transformative. "The speaker series was both informative and inspiring," Cyreema explained. So impressed by Cyreema's on-screen presence, Elevate+ invited her to host the Role Model Speaker Series, featuring chats with accomplished professionals in a variety of fields—work she was compensated to perform. "The sessions gave me the tools to navigate professional environments and equipped me with strategies to connect with mentors and peers. It helped me build confidence and master professional communication."

Reflecting on the challenges she overcame, Cyreema credits her Elevate+ internship experience with helping her gain confidence in her abilities and adapt to new professional settings. "It helped me gain experience working and mastering the basics of a professional environment, from communication to time management," she noted.

A key moment in Cyreema’s journey was the mentorship she received from Christine Thorsen at Discovery Orchestra, and from Elevate+ Trustee Beth Gottung, who happens to be the co-head of Montclair Folm. "Christine’s organizational insights and Beth’s creative vision gave me the confidence to combine technical expertise with storytelling—a balance that has shaped my career goals," she shared. Their guidance helped her navigate her internships and inspired her to take ownership of her professional growth.

Looking back, Cyreema believes Elevate+ played a pivotal role in her development. "I think Elevate+ has connected me with mentors and given me experiences I wouldn’t have had otherwise," she emphasized. The program not only expanded her skill set but also opened doors to future opportunities.

Cyreema’s advice to future interns is simple but powerful: "Maintain connections through natural conversations and seize every opportunity to grow. Those relationships and experiences can shape your career path in unexpected ways."

Today, Cyreema continues to apply the skills she developed during her internships, particularly her expertise in media production. "My editing skills that I developed while at HTTV have already been useful in my academic and personal projects," she said.

She also credits her Elevate+ experience for helping her land an opportunity to work at the Cannes Film Festival the summer before her senior year. Her journey from editing videos in a New Jersey television studio to interning at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival demonstrates how Elevate+ empowers young people to know what they are capable of doing and achieve more. From community television in New Jersey to the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in France—an impressive progression!

Elevate+ helped Cyreema Marshall build confidence, develop technical expertise, and connect with inspiring mentors. Before joining Elevate+, Aryel Rodriguez had limited work experience outside of part-time retail jobs. He was eager to step into a more professional environment to develop new skills and gain valuable insight into potential career paths.

Aryel decided to apply for the Elevate+ internship program after hearing about it from a mentor. "I was inspired to apply for the internship by a mentor who spoke highly of the professional growth and networking opportunities it provided," Aryel shared. The opportunity to grow alongside like-minded individuals and receive mentorship was a key motivator.

During his internship, Aryel worked as a communications intern at SAGE Eldercare , where he contributed to managing social media accounts, created video for promotional use, and organizing website content. His day-to-day responsibilities involved researching and developing cohesive messaging and engaging with the community.

We are thrilled to share that we are close to achieving our goal of securing 40 internship opportunities with nonprofit organizations and an additional 10 placements with corporate partners. Enhancing Summer Programming

We are gearing up for an exceptional summer by enhancing our programming to better prepare students for the challenges ahead. This year, we are introducing a Candidate Strategies for Success program, designed to equip students with the tools and confidence they need to excel during the application and interview processes. This program will focus on skills such as crafting impactful application material, preparing for interviews, and learning effective communication strategies to leave a lasting impression.

In addition, we will continue offering:

Job Readiness Training to prepare the students for working in a professional environment
Masterclasses on personal branding and applying for jobs after completing school
Networking Events , which will include professional headshot photography sessions to help students build a polished and professional presence.
Role Model Speaker Series to inform, inspire, and guide our students on what it takes to succeed in a variety of fields

Financial Stewardship and Fundraising

We have fully transitioned to our new budgeting model, ensuring we can continue to scale responsibly. We are proud to report that approximately 90% of the funds we raise go directly into our programming, with the largest portion allocated to funding the wages of our interns. This commitment reflects our dedication to creating paid, equitable opportunities for students who need them most. Our fundraising efforts for this summer are in their final stages, and we are deeply grateful for the community’s continued support. We are nearing our goal of fully funding all planned internships. If you're inclined to donate to Elevate+ in 2025, doing so over the next few weeks will be particularly helpful.

Building on Past Success

Since our founding, Elevate+ has placed students into 150 internships across a range of positions, including marketing, accounting, education, and case management. In 2025, we aim to build on this success by expanding our reach and deepening our impact. Elevate to Even Plus (Elevate+), a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding opportunities for underserved students through paid summer internships and enrichment programs, proudly announces the appointment of J ulie Keenan to its Board of Trustees.

Julie Keenan brings over two decades of experience in operations, change management, and strategic leadership in both the public and nonprofit sectors. Her extensive background includes serving as Chief Operating Officer for the NJ Pandemic Relief Fund, Executive Director of the Schumann Fund for New Jersey, and consulting for organizations such as the City of New York’s Administration for Children’s Services and the CITI Program. Throughout her career, Julie has demonstrated a deep commitment to causes that align closely with Elevate+'s mission of educational equity and empowerment.

In her role as trustee, Julie will leverage her strategic insights and leadership experience to help guide Elevate+ as it continues to expand its reach, ensuring that more students from underrepresented communities have access to transformative summer work opportunities.

Julie holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, cum laude, from Duke University and an MBA from Stanford University. Her leadership roles have spanned various sectors, including education, environmental protection, and public policy. Julie also currently serves on the boards of TEAM Academy (KIPP) in Newark and the Bald Head Island Conservancy.

With this new appointment, Elevate+ continues to strengthen its leadership and commitment to fostering economic equity for all students.

Internship Reflection: My Experience at Elevate+

One thing they don’t warn you about internships is how quickly they fly by. Just like that, I’m in the final week of my 10-week internship. Interning at Elevate to Even Plus has been an incredible journey of professional and personal growth. This role challenged me to go beyond what I thought I was capable of, and I was pleasantly surprised by the results.

As a marketing intern, my focus was on content development and managing social media platforms to drive community engagement. Many factors intersect a successful social media strategy. Whether I was analyzing social media analytics, incorporating SEO knowledge, or developing targeted engaging content, each step I took was carefully planned.

I am thankful for the hands-on experiences and creative freedom I had in my role. One of the highlights of my internship was creating and developing my own social media campaign, the Alumni Spotlight. By highlighting the experiences of alumni, I inspired our community of interns, built awareness for Elevate to Even Plus, and spotlighted the accomplishments of the alumni. With this project, I progressed in skills from project management to video editing.

This internship inspired me to pursue a career in social media marketing. It combines my passion for creativity with my academic background in psychology to understand engagement. I also learned the importance of believing in a company’s mission and how it is reflected in my work. I support and deeply resonate with Elevate to Even Plus’s mission, which motivated me to work harder in spreading our message. My mother, an Ecuadorian immigrant, didn’t have an opportunity to pursue an education because she had to support her family. I want students living in marginalized communities to know that there are people who see our potential to achieve greatness.

Elevate Plus’s passion for guiding and preparing young professionals to navigate the world of work has left me feeling like I can take on the marketing industry. I was provided with professional development opportunities, connected with like-minded individuals, and gained an understanding of working in a non-profit marketing organization. I am beyond grateful to have contributed to Elevate to Even Plus’s mission and for the opportunity to strengthen and develop skills that will benefit me for the rest of my life.

Lessons from Abroad: Balancing Work and Life

Have you ever noticed how effortlessly relaxed Europeans seem? During my spring semester studying abroad in Barcelona, I discovered their secret: mastering the art of work-life balance.

Let’s be honest, life is unpredictable. Often, to get where you want to be, you have to put more energy into your work life than yourself. Finding a balance that works in your favor is important to avoid burnout.

I am now halfway into my internship. I love having the opportunity to test my skills with challenging work, but I am learning to create balance. Here are some things I’ve implemented in my routine that are helping me achieve a manageable work-life balance.

1. Prioritizing Personal Activities

Living in Spain, I noticed that personal time is a priority. Whether restaurants are closed for afternoon siestas or friends meet up for a sobremesa, life isn’t overshadowed by work.

When I returned to the United States, I wanted to put more energy into things that bring me joy and connect me with my community. My favorite way to recharge is meeting with my friends once a week and trying something new—a new restaurant or a movie in the park.

Find the activity that helps you unwind! Have a date with a book, or cook up a new recipe. Recharging your brain and body improves your focus and energy when you return to work.

2. Designate Work-Free Zones

I was shocked when I first walked into a cafe in Barcelona on a Sunday. Laptop in hand, I was ready to catch up on work. To my surprise, most cafes are laptop-free zones on the weekends! This encourages people to truly take a break during their downtime.

I placed a similar rule in my home. I dedicated my room to a work-free zone – no work-related activities inside! It’s my way of setting boundaries between work and life. When I need a break, my room is associated with relaxation, not productivity.

This could work anywhere! As long as you have somewhere reserved for your peace, you’ll find it easier to maintain a balance.

3. Find Your Routine

In Barcelona, I had to sit in my morning classes with no caffeine in my system. My favorite cafe didn’t open until 9 AM! Everything is shifted over on the clock in Barcelona. The city stays alive past 10 PM, prime dinner time.

In a recent poll, I asked what time of the day one feels most productive. While I wasn’t surprised by the early morning win, I consider myself a night owl. I easily adapted to Barcelona’s timeline and saw how my productivity levels soared. I did my work in the evenings and still had time to socialize afterward.

It’s easy to believe we need to follow the exact routines we see on social media to become successful but don’t be shy to adjust where needed! Find and stick to a routine that works around the work-life balance you want to have. Creating stability and staying attentive to your needs reduces stress and burnout.

My First Networking Event: Embracing Uncertainty

Feeling excited, anxious, and curious, I stepped into my first networking event, not knowing what to expect. On LinkedIn, everyone appeared so effortlessly professional and always seemed to know the right things to say. This made me feel like giving up before I even began.

In a recent poll, I discovered that many fellow interns share the same feelings about attending networking events. It is intimidating to be in a room full of strangers, unsure of who to approach or how to start a conversation.

However, my expectations couldn’t be more off. Five minutes into the event, I met a fellow intern in the same boat as me. We hit it off right away, sharing our experiences and stories.

What felt like an intimidating environment taught me the importance of lateral networking. Lateral networking involves building relationships with peers at your level. I always believed networking was focused on connecting with industry seniors but connecting with peers is just as powerful.

Lateral networking offers support systems, opens your eyes to different perspectives, and creates a strong foundation for your future success. Your intern peers at the same level can offer support as you grow in your career, just as you can support others growing in their careers.

After experiencing how easily my conversations flowed with fellow interns, I gained the confidence to approach others. I learned networking is about being curious about others and open to conversations. Don’t wait for your next networking event to practice the power of lateral networking. Spark up a conversation with the classmate sitting next to you. Send that LinkedIn connection to an intern in another department. It’s natural to feel nervous before trying something new. Being nervous means you care.

India Charles appointed to the Elevate to Even Plus Board of Trustees

The Elevate to Even Plus Board of Trustees is delighted to announce the election of India Charles to the board effective immediately. As a dedicated advocate for social welfare and an undergraduate student at the University of Eastern Connecticut majoring in Social Work, Ms. Charles is poised to bring a valuable stakeholder perspective and an infusion of energetic leadership to the board.

While studying Social Work at CT State Three Rivers College, India was part of the inaugural Elevate to Even Plus internship program in Eastern Connecticut. Her exceptional commitment was recognized as an intern with the New London Homeless Hospitality Center (NLHHC), leading to a part-time position as a Tenant Representative for UniteCT at NLHHC. This role highlighted her dedication and capabilities, earning her a commendable recommendation from her manager at NLHHC and aiding her successful transfer to Eastern Connecticut University.

Since then, India has been an active alumna supporter of Elevate to Even Plus while demonstrating impressive leadership and guidance skills. India has also served as a part-time Food Pantry Assistant at FRESH New London, underscoring her commitment to community service. Recognized for her potential, India’s nomination was enthusiastically endorsed by Higher Edge, our intern talent sourcing partner in New London, for her leadership and personal experience.

January Journey, Miles of Impact: $7,000 raised in Inaugural Fundraiser

In a remarkable display of community spirit and determination, Elevate to Even+, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing summer internships for underserved students, concluded its first-ever peer-to-peer fundraiser titled "January Journey, Miles of Impact." The event, which took place throughout January, saw participants from all walks of life come together to walk, run, cycle, and elliptize (yes, that's a word now) their way to raising funds for a noble cause.

While the initial target was ambitious — aiming to raise $25,000 and collectively cover 11,001 miles — the event fell short of these numbers. However, what it achieved was no less impressive. With $7,000 raised and numerous miles covered, the event not only garnered significant financial support but also brought together a community passionate about creating opportunities for deserving students.

The statistics speak volumes about the impact of the event. Twenty-seven individuals signed up to participate, showing a strong commitment to the cause. Moreover, the support extended beyond the participants themselves, with 91 people sponsoring their efforts. This not only contributed to the fundraising goal but also marked a significant increase in Elevate to Even+'s donor base, highlighting the growing support for its mission.

Organized by Elevate to Even+ trustee Anthony Gonzalez, he said, “We aimed really high for our first time out with and activity like this and I am really happy with the result. We saw participants and donors from across the country. Even more than money, we raised awareness of what we’re all about and had a lot of fun. This is something we can build upon year over year, and I am already thinking about a second Miles of Impact event for this fall.”

Among the standout contributors was Dale Klein, from Westchester County, NY who demonstrated exceptional dedication by accumulating an impressive 446 miles through biking, walking, and running throughout the month. Klein's efforts earned her the coveted Elevate to Even+ swag bag, serving as a testament to her commitment to the cause and an inspiration to others.

The "January Journey, Miles of Impact" event was more than just a fundraiser; it was a rallying cry for equity and opportunity. By transforming everyday activities into avenues for change, participants fueled the mission of the organization and paved the way for a brighter future for underserved students. Each mile covered was not merely a distance traveled but a step towards breaking down barriers and opening doors to new possibilities.

Elevate to Even Plus ("Elevate+"), under the stewardship of founder and president Andrew Walker, is ushering in a groundbreaking year as it prepares to launch its 2024 internship program. With a focus on empowering marginalized students, Elevate+ is rewriting the narrative of access and opportunity in education. Walker shares insights into the organization's evolution and the strides it's making in creating transformative experiences for underserved youth.

"Founded just four years ago, we're still learning and growing from year to year," Walker shares. "This year, we adopted a new budgeting approach, which had the potential to limit the size of our program during a one-year transition. However, extraordinary funding from the Greater Cleveland Partnership and several of our host partners contributing their own funds towards the interns' wages has meant our program is actually on pace to become larger than last year's."

Walker's words encapsulate Elevate+'s commitment to innovation and adaptability. From its inception, Elevate+ has been dedicated to providing underserved high school and college students from marginalized backgrounds with access to life-changing internship opportunities. These students, predominantly of color from low-income households, have demonstrated exceptional achievement or potential in various aspects of their lives.

For Elevate+, 2024 marks a significant shift in fundraising tactics. "For our first three summers, we determined the cost of the summer program and then proceeded to fundraise intensively to cover our costs," explains Walker. "However, from 2024, we've started to raise money for the following year. So 2024 fundraising will pay for 2025 internships."

Despite facing a short fundraising window for 2024's internships, Elevate+ has secured vital support from various sources. "Since we only finished raising the money needed to pay for 2023 internships last November, we had a very short window to raise money for 2024's internships," Walker reveals. "As a result, we raised only a small fraction of what we funded in prior years for this summer's interns. Greater Cleveland Partnership will provide the lion's share of funding, enough to cover over 30 internships in the Cleveland area. A grant from the Good People Fund will cover two more spots and several host partners in other locations will be self-funding all or part of their intern's wages to bridge the gap."

Walker's insights highlight the collaborative efforts that drive Elevate+'s success. Through partnerships with organizations like the Greater Cleveland Partnership and host partners across the country, Elevate+ is able to expand its reach and provide more opportunities for students. "We are so fortunate and grateful for all the additional help this year," he said.

What's in a name? More than you'd think.

Elevate to Even Plus Incorporated: A Name in Transition

What's in a name? For Elevate to Even Plus Incorporated, formerly operating day to day as Eleven+, the answer is quite a bit. As Founder Andrew Walker sought a more concise representation of the organization's mission, he settled on the amalgamation Eleven+. While easier to pronounce, it often left people questioning its significance. The explanation that "el" represented "elevate" combined with "even" and "+" was required to be added to most introductory conversations, effectively defeating the purpose of the shorter name. Eventually, Walker was even compelled to add a page to its website to explain the meaning.

It’s time to acknowledge you might have a naming problem when you have to have a dedicated page to clarify “why Eleven+”.

However, at a recent board meeting, the trustees reached a consensus: as the organization matures, it's time to bid farewell to Eleven+. While web and email addresses may retain the old moniker (eleven-plus.org), the organization has ceased using Eleven+ in its branding.

But what will replace Eleven+? The path forward isn't yet clear. While exploring alternatives, one leading contender is "Elevate+". Simple enough. Another suggestion, "E2E+", proposed by ChatGPT, was deemed too reminiscent of an Excel error. Visual representations, such as the use of a symbol akin to the one temporarily employed by the artist Prince, might be clever but even harder to explain!

For expediency, you may well see Elevate+ appearing for brevity in our blogs and emails but we’re keeping an open mind about what we adopt long term— and we're open to suggestions.

So, while Elevate to Even Plus Incorporated navigates this transition, its mission remains steadfast: to elevate individuals, empower communities, and exceed expectations. Thank you for your curiosity and support as we embark on this next chapter.
